The Balze of Valdarno are one of Tuscany's most fascinating natural landscapes. These spectacular formations of sand, clay, gravel and pebbles were created around two million years ago, when the entire Valdarno Valley was covered by a large lake. As the lake gradually dried up, water and natural erosion shaped the land into the striking clay cliffs that make this area so unique today.
This extraordinary landscape is believed to have inspired Leonardo da Vinci, who is thought to have portrayed the Balze in the background of some of his most famous works, including the Mona Lisa.
If you would like to experience this remarkable landscape up close, we recommend the Acqua Zolfina Trail, starting from Castelfranco di Sopra, just a few minutes from Casina Iris. This easy circular route is approximately 7.5 km (4.7 miles) long and takes about 2 hours to complete. Suitable for families, the trail winds through woodlands, open countryside and breathtaking viewpoints, offering unforgettable views of the Balze and before reaching the famous sulphur spring known as Acqua Zolfina.
The Balze are not confined to a single location but extend across much of the Valdarno Valley. They are the remains of the ancient lake that once covered this area millions of years ago. As the lake disappeared, erosion gradually sculpted the spectacular clay formations that still define the landscape today.
As you drive from the motorway towards Casina Iris, you will already be able to admire these impressive formations on both sides of the road—offering a wonderful preview of the beauty that awaits you in this unique corner of Tuscany.
